Every time we think we've seen it all, along comes another surprise. Sure, we've seen plenty of street Mustangs purported to make 600 or more rear-wheel horsepower. But we've never seen one that looks this stock--no cowl hood, no wing, no window tint, no aftermarket wheels. The only giveaways include TDC stickers on the windows, a boost gauge on the pillar, and the discreet rollcage. But come on--from 50 feet all but the most keen horsepower junkies would say this thing's a stocker. Oh, yeah, and it's quiet too.
OK, so it looks stock, and it's quiet, but there must be a real animal of a high-tech engine underhood, right? Well, not quite. Can you say stock short-block with a GT-40 intake and J302 heads--yes, the first aftermarket heads ever created for the 5.0. Then, of course, there is the Turbo Driven Concepts Stage IIX twin-turbo system that really makes all the magic happen at the rear wheels. Burning pump gas in the tank and shoving 13.5 psi through the intercooler, this combination was good for a whopping 598 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque! When owner Joe Sanchez wants to pull out all the stops, with more boost and C-16 race gas, this little LX has spun the chassis dyno up to 680 rear-wheel horsepower.
Joe says there are "a bunch of LXs" around Miami, and every so often, one will try to pick on this stock-looking LX. He likes to let them take off first, so they can hear the whistling of the turbos as he passes by them. And we thought Joe surprised us with his stealthy ride. Now, we suspect, every red LX in South Florida has a built-in rep, thanks to Joe's twin-turbo terror.
Horse Sense: Turbo Driven Concepts' Stage II twin-turbo kit sells for $4,495, but you don't need much more than quality head gaskets, head studs, larger injectors, and a timing retard to make more than 500 hp. The kit includes mandrel-bent intake and exhaust tubing, a Spearco intercooler, a 21/2-inch X-pipe, funnel-style air filters, silicone hoses, Taylor spark plug wires, and an adjustable boost controller.
